Take-Home Exam Help UK: Open-Book Exams, Done Properly and Honestly

Quick answer: We help UK students prepare for take-home and open-book exams the legitimate way: revision planning, timed practice questions with fully worked model answers, answer-structuring coaching and clear guidance on what your university’s rules actually allow. Send us your exam format and module topics on WhatsApp and we will build a preparation plan around them — from £20 per 1,000 words for written practice material. What we never do is sit an exam for you or write answers for you to submit as your own during the exam itself; that is misconduct, and any service offering it is putting your degree at risk. Read our academic integrity approach for exactly where the line sits.

Take-home and open-book exams have quietly become one of the most common assessment formats in UK universities — and one of the most misunderstood. Students assume “open book” means “easy”, then discover the hard truth in the exam window itself: the questions are designed to test application and judgement, not recall, the time is shorter than it feels, and markers can tell instantly whether an answer was planned or pasted together in a panic. The students who do well in these exams are rarely the ones who know the most. They are the ones who prepared their materials, practised under timed conditions, and walked in with a structure for every likely question type. That preparation is exactly what we help with, and it is how we have supported 1,000+ UK students across exam seasons.

What take-home and open-book exams actually involve

Timed take-home exams (24–72 hour windows)

You receive the paper at a set time and submit within a fixed window — commonly 24 or 48 hours. The trap is treating the window as study time. In reality, most of it should be writing time: the students who do well have their notes organised, their key sources summarised, and their answer plans sketched before the paper even drops. We help you build that preparation in the days before: topic triage, condensed revision notes in your own structure, and practice answers written against the clock.

Open-book exams in exam halls or online

Notes and set texts are permitted, which changes what markers reward. There is no credit for reproducing the textbook — the marks are in selection, application and argument. Preparation means knowing your materials well enough to find the right page in seconds and having practised turning sources into arguments quickly. Our worked practice answers show you what that looks like at each grade band.

Seen exams and pre-released questions

Some modules release the questions — or the topic areas — in advance. This is where structured help pays off most: the exam rewards the quality of your prepared thinking, so we help you draft practice answers, stress-test your arguments, and prepare flexible plans that adapt to the exact wording on the day.

How we help you prepare

A revision plan built around your paper

Tell us the module, the exam format, the window length and the topic list. We map the likely question types, rank topics by how examinable they are, and build a day-by-day plan for the run-up — what to revise, what to summarise, what to practise writing. No generic “revise everything” advice.

Timed practice with worked model answers

The single most effective preparation for these formats. We set or use past-paper questions, you attempt them under real time conditions, and we produce a fully worked model answer to the same question so you can compare structure, depth and timing directly. Seeing exactly where your answer lost marks — too much description, no application, ran out of time in section two — is worth more than another week of passive reading.

Answer structures you can reuse

Most take-home papers recycle a small set of question shapes: the problem scenario, the critical essay, the short-answer set, the case analysis. We give you a skeleton for each — how to open, how to signpost, how to allocate minutes per mark — so that on the day you are executing a plan rather than improvising one.

Your materials are part of the exam

Open-book preparation is not just revision — it is logistics. We help you organise the notes, summaries and texts you are allowed to bring so they work under pressure: a one-page map for each topic showing where everything lives, tabbed and indexed sources, formula and framework sheets, and a shortlist of the quotations and authorities most likely to earn their place in an answer. Students lose surprising amounts of exam time simply hunting through unorganised folders; a prepared candidate spends that time writing. In the final practice round we rehearse with exactly the materials you will have in front of you on the day, so nothing about the setup is new when the window opens.

The final week, structured

The last seven days decide more than the previous seven weeks for most students, because that is when preparation either becomes a plan or dissolves into rereading. Our preparation packs end with a day-by-day final-week schedule: which topics get full timed practice, which get summary-only revision, when to stop learning new material, and how to use the hours inside a long take-home window itself — drafting in the first third, writing in the second, and reserving the final stretch for checking, referencing and the answers you deliberately left until your thinking was warmest. Walking into the window with that schedule already decided is the closest thing these formats have to a guarantee.

Rules clarity, in writing

Every university’s regulations differ: what materials are allowed, whether collaboration is prohibited (it almost always is), how AI tools are treated, what referencing is expected in exam conditions. Before your window opens, we help you read your own exam regulations properly so nothing you do in good faith falls foul of them.

How it works

  1. Message us on WhatsApp with your module, exam format, window dates and topic list — plus any past papers or the assessment brief if you have them.
  2. Get an exact quote in writing before anything starts. Preparation material is priced from £20 per 1,000 words on the same published scale as everything else; see the pricing page.
  3. We build your preparation pack — revision plan, condensed topic summaries and timed practice questions with worked model answers, matched to your module and grade target.
  4. You practise, we review — attempt the practice questions against the clock, then compare with the model answers and ask us anything. If your exam does not go to plan, our resit exam help page explains the support available for retakes.

Honest, published pricing

Exam preparation is priced exactly like everything else we do: written material from £20 per 1,000 words at standard deadlines, with faster turnarounds on the same published scale. Your quote is confirmed in writing before work begins. There is no surge pricing during exam season and no charge for asking questions about your own practice attempts.

Why students choose us for exam preparation

  • Preparation, not misconduct — everything we provide is for you to learn from before the exam, which is why it can never come back on you afterwards
  • Format-specific — take-home windows, open-book halls and seen papers each get a different preparation plan, because they are different tests
  • Timed practice as standard — model answers written to the same clock you will face, so the timing lessons are real
  • Calm, honest advice — if your window is too close for full preparation, we will tell you what is realistically achievable rather than selling you a fantasy

Take-home exam questions

Can you just write my take-home exam answers for me?

No — and you should run from any service that offers to. Submitting work you did not write in an exam is academic misconduct with the severest penalties universities have, up to expulsion. What we do instead is prepare you properly beforehand: plans, summaries, timed practice and worked model answers, so the answers you write in the window are genuinely yours and genuinely good.

How close to my exam can I start?

Earlier is always better — a week gives us room for two or three timed practice rounds. But even 48 hours out, a topic-triage plan and condensed summaries for the most examinable areas can change your result. Message us and we will be honest about what fits in the time left.

What do you need from me to build a preparation pack?

Your module code and title, the exam format and window dates, the topic or reading list, and any past papers or sample questions. The assessment brief and marking criteria help us aim the practice material at the right grade band.

Are open-book exams actually easier?

No — they are marked harder. Because sources are allowed, markers give little credit for recall and reward selection, application and argument. Students who treat them as “no revision needed” consistently underperform; students who prepare their materials and practise writing with them do well.

What if I fail and have to resit?

It happens, and it is recoverable. Most universities offer a resit or retake window, sometimes capped at the pass mark. Our resit exam help covers preparation support for exactly that situation, including how capped marks work.
